Why miniatures?

Miniatures are small and jewel-like.They seem to have a peculiar intimacy and stillness about them - often they were precious tokens of affection. They're fragile and subtly translucent, the result of overlaying minute brushstrokes of watercolour over ivory, or today ivorine. I love the qualities of this art form.

Historically, miniature painters (limners) are self taught. I'm no exception, although I had a good grounding in composition and drawing as a foundation student at Wimbledon School of Art.

This gentle occuptation of limning resonates with life as its being me at the moment, tucked away in a tiny Cornish basement flat hidden from the tourist's gaze.

Inspiration: shifting perceptions.

Overlooked glimpses of Marazion are endlessly inspiring, and on the doorstep. The possibility of limning in a fresh and contemporary way is equally stimulating, as is conveying the fluidity of life. It's hoped a body of work will be assembled by the end of February 2009. Click being in touch to be invited to the Spring Private View.
